While the weather has yet to decide if winter is over and spring can finally get under way, the spring athletic season has officially kicked off for many former Rivers athletes. However, like the winter weather, winter sports continue to make the news – in this case, from the sidelines of a basketball court in Poughkeepsie, New York.
B.J. Dunne ’06 is one of the rising gold stars of the collegiate basketball coaching profession and his accomplishments as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Vassar College have earned him a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2016 Under Armour 30 Under 30 Team. This list recognizes the best coaches under the age of 30 across all levels of college basketball and Dunne is the only name on the list from a Division III program.
B.J. completed his third season at the helm of the Brewers in February and has compiled a record of 38-40, which includes a debut season where he set the program record for wins (19) and led Vassar to its first ever Liberty League Tournament Championship game appearance.
Tim Corey ’10 Named Assistant Baseball Coach at Colby College
Tim Corey ’10 wrapped up his collegiate baseball career last spring by captaining the Colby College team, but this spring he finds himself on the other side of the foul line as an assistant coach. Corey set a program record for doubles, smacking 14 as a senior in 2015, and was consistent behind the plate where he started 27 of the Mules’ 34 games.
He won’t be making this transition alone, however. Corey will have pair of fellow Rivers alumni in Matt Treveloni ’14 and Will Cohen ’15 to lean on as he transitions into this exciting new role in Waterville.
Brendan King '12 Named to Cape Cod Baseball League Roster
Brendan King ’12 is the midst of his best collegiate season for Holy Cross and his string of strong starts has earned the attention of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He will play for the Falmouth Commodores this summer, adding his name to a list of former players that includes 30 current Major League Baseball players and is headlined by Jacoby Ellsbury.
Before that, however, King must focus on his final season with the Crusaders. In seven starts this year, Brendan has posted a 3-2 record and held opposing hitters to a .272 batting average. On February 21, Brendan threw a six-inning gem in a 3-2 win over national powerhouse Long Beach State.
Other Rivers alumni baseball players: Jake Willsey ’13 (Tulane) and Sean Sullivan ’15 (Dartmouth).
Sam Cleveland '15, Collin Orr '14 Leading Colgate Lacrosse
Sam Cleveland ’15 was a major presence on the field for the Rivers lacrosse team last season, leading the team in scoring en route to a spot on the All-ISL team. Now suiting up for Colgate University, Sam has continued to pace the offense and currently sits atop the Raiders scoring list with 22 points through 10 games.
After establishing himself as a threat with three goals and three assists in just his second collegiate game, an 11-4 win over Binghamton, Sam has recorded at least one point in all but one game this season. His 13 goals and nine assists are both team highs.
While Cleveland has done his work in the offensive zone, Collin Orr ’13 has done his at the faceoff “x” as the team’s first-choice faceoff specialist. He has won 44 percent of his faceoffs this season and recently won 6-of-9 against Fairfield on March 19.
Other Rivers alumni men’s lacrosse players: Spencer Low ’12 (Babson), Jack Rautiola ’12 (Middlebury), Conor Van Duzer ’12 (Hartford), Shaun O’Hare ’14 (Sacred Heart) Brendan Gates ’14 (Hartford), and Sam Reardon ’14 (Union).
