Rivers Big Band Claims Pair of MAJE Silver Medals

The Rivers Big Band wrapped up a very successful year on the competition circuit by earning a pair of Silver Medals at a pair of Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE) competitions.

On March 9, the Big Band took part in the MAJE Senior District Competition at Nipmunc Regional High School and won a Silver Medal. Alex Gomez ’17, Joe Nedder ’18, and Michael Manasseh ’19 each received Outstanding Musician awards, and the judges named Joe the MVP of the entire competition.

Then, on March 19, the Big Band packed up and travelled to Norwood to take part in the MAJE State Finals where they once again received the Silver Medal. Joe and Michael received Outstanding Musicianship recognition at this competition, as well.

“The band has constantly improved this year and that is what matters most. We have a solid foundation which we can continue to build on and develop moving forward,” said band director Philippe Crettien. “We are all extremely proud of the students’ accomplishments and proud to be members of the Rivers Big band.”

The Big Band was named a finalist in the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition and finished third at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival earlier this year. With all but three members of the ensemble returning next year, the sky is truly the limit for the Rivers Big Band.
