Students continue to receive recognition well beyond the Rivers campus with a number of recent kudos for creativity in writing and the arts.
A ceramic work by Anna Donlan ’19, entitled “Box of Fears,” was selected by jurors for inclusion in this year’s Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition in Kansas City, MO in mid-March. Her piece was chosen from among 1344 entries for this year's exhibition which is open to visitors from all over the world, many of whom will be in Kansas City for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.
During the exhibition, Anna's work was also selected for the Paragon Industries Kiln Award: based upon the work of students and teachers as selected by the juror, one school in the US each year receives a top of the line, digital kiln, supplied by Arnold Howard of Paragon Industries, L.P. - Better Designed Kilns.
Two students—Omar Frometa ’17 and Ashley Burgarella ’18—were accepted into The New England Young Writers’ Conference (NEYWC) at Bread Loaf, a four day writing-focused workshop for high school students in New England and from around the country. The conference will be held from May 19-22, and include a long weekend of writing seminars, workshops, readings, and opportunities to meet fellow young writers. Hosted at the Bread Loaf Campus at Middlebury College in VT, students will work with published writers to gain inspiration and develop skills.
Ashley recently won four awards from the Boston Globe Scholastic Writing Competition— a Silver Key in the science fiction/fantasy category for “Return the Car” and three honorable mentions, for “Memories” (science fiction/fantasy), “After Buildings Crumble” (poetry), and “I Stood Once More” (poetry).
Pianist Derek Wang ’16 was invited to participate in the instrumental music program of the National YoungArts Week in Miami, FL in January as one of 170 finalists from around the country. During the week, musicians had the opportunity to work intensively with coaches, participate in interdisciplinary and genre-specific master classes, and perform at the YoungArts Campus and New World Symphony.
Earlier in the school year, Derek won the piano concerto competition at the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School and performed Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 with the orchestra in New York in December. He also performed on From the Top, hosted by Christopher O’ Riley, in 2014 and 2015.
