Five Students Honored by Massachusetts Music Educators Association
The Massachusetts Music Educators Association held auditions for its annual Junior District Festival on January 30 at Needham High School and four Rivers students were accepted for spots in both the Chorus and Orchestra.
Students in grades 7-9 from more than 150 schools in the Greater Boston area competed for the Junior District Festival and Rivers ninth graders Ella Caggiano ’19, Natalie Hall ’19, and Rebecca Statchel ’19 earned spots in the Chorus while Simonida Spasojevic ’19 was chosen for the Orchestra. Simonida, a flutist, received the highest score of the 78 students auditioning, earning her the distinction of first flute, first chair in the orchestra.
The Junior District Festival will be held the weekend of March 4-5, 2016 at Lincoln-Sudbury High School.
"Each student who auditioned worked very hard with faculty members here at Rivers to prepare material outside of their usual coursework, and it clearly paid off,” said Middle School Chamber Ensemble Director Dan Shaud “The festival will be a great chance for them to grow as musicians and be inspired by talented peers and teachers from all over the Boston area."
Silvia Curry ’16 performed at the MMEA Senior District Festival on January 8 and 9 and earned an All-State recommendation for her contribution to the orchestra. After auditioning on January 23, Silvia was chosen for the All-State Orchestra and will perform at the All-State Festival at Boston’s Seaport/World Trade Center and Symphony Hall March 10-12.
