Boys' Cross Country Claims New England Championship, Field Hockey and Boys' Soccer Prepare for Tournaments

The boys’ varsity cross country team claimed its first ever New England Championship, blowing away the field at the New England Preparatory School Track Association Division III Championships on Saturday at Weston High School. The win kicks off a week of postseason play that will also feature the varsity field hockey and boys’ varsity soccer teams.

Nic Stathos ’18, Mark Ryan ’20, and Aidan McAnena ’18 finished fifth, 10th, and 16th, respectively, to earn All-New England honors while Xavier Zuvekas ’19 and George Reinhardt ’20 finished 22nd and 25th to round out Rivers’ scoring runners. The Red Wings 75 points was far and away the best in the field as second-place Middlesex finished with 141 points.

The girls’ varsity cross country team finished third, making 2017 the first year that both the boys’ and girls’ teams earned team awards at the New England Championships. Addy Vettel ’20, Caroline Grape ’18, and Stephanie Dailey ’19 finished second, fifth, and 11th, respectively, to earn All-New England honors.

The boys’ varsity soccer team finished the regular season with a 9-4-4 record and will continue their season on Wednesday, November 15, as the No. 5 seed in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament. The Red Wings will travel to No. 4 Middlesex School for a 2:00 p.m. rematch with the Zebras, who won the first match, 1-0, back on October 25.

Earlier this month, the boys celebrated a major program milestone as head coach Bob Pipe earned his 200th career win with a 1-0 victory over St. George’s on November 3. Parents of players on the team organized a celebration with members of Coach Pipe’s family and former players following Saturday’s game against Roxbury Latin.

The varsity field hockey team earned its way into the NEPSAC Class B Tournament by posting an 11-4-1 record. The Red Wings are the No. 5 seed and will travel to face No. 4 Brooks School on Wednesday, November 15, at 2:15 p.m. Rivers and Brooks faced off back on October 14 in a contest Brooks won, 2-1.
