Students Receive National Merit Recognition

Senior Julia Holton was recently named a semi-finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, eight classmates received letters of commendation: Lindsay Bogar, Emma Chowdhury, Alex Clay, Kasey Cunningham, Phie Jacobs, Mackenzie Larkin, Devan McCaffrey, and Emily Shen.

Holton is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. She is now eligible to compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring by the privately funded program. To be considered for an award, semifinalists must fulfill several additional requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

Approximately 34,000 commended students throughout the nation were recognized for their academic accomplishment, based their scores on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who were entered the 2018 competition by taking the test in 2016.

“It comes as no surprise that these students performed well on the PSAT test, as they have been known for their hard work and commitment to excellence throughout their academic careers at Rivers,” said Upper School Dean of Academic Affairs Susan Tammaro.
