On Monday, May 8, more than 120 Rivers alumni, parents, and friends braved a chilly, but sunny day to play in the 17th Annual Rivers School Golf Tournament to Benefit Financial Aid. In addition to providing a chance to reconnect and enjoy the Robert Trent Jones-designed course at Charter Oak Country Club, the event raised more than $70,000 to help deserving and qualified students attend Rivers.
“The golf tournament was an awesome success,” said Golf Committee Chair JB Karelitz ’01. “We had good weather, a great turnout, and great company. The post-golf dinner with Dara Torres was inspirational. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so enjoyable and a great financial success for the Rivers financial aid program. We can’t wait to do it again next year!”
The success of the tournament was due in large part to the efforts of the Golf Committee and the generosity of the Daley Family – Pat ’84 P’13,’15,’18 and Fred P’12,’14,’16 – who, once again, donated Charter Oak for the day.
Highlight of the dinner following the game was an entertaining and riveting talk by Dara Torres who described her path to becoming five time Olympian, twelve-time Olympic medalist and former world record-holder in three swimming events, often competing against swimmers young enough to be her children. In addition to her outstanding Olympic accomplishments, Torres frequently appears on Fox News, ESPN, CNN, Piers Morgan tonight, the Today Show, Good Morning America and many other shows.
Jeff Lowenstein ’77, P’10,’16 was this year’s honoree in recognition of his commitment to the tournament. Jeff has played every year since the tournament was established in 2001, and been a member of the Golf Committee since 2003.
“Jeff has done a great job soliciting sponsors, donating auction items, and recruiting players,” said Karelitz in recognizing Jeff. “He has also been an enthusiastic member of the Alumni Council since 2000 and served on his Reunion Committee many times. We appreciate the time and effort Jeff has given to help make the Rivers tournament so successful.”
The foursome of Scott Barchard ‘06, B.J. Dunne ‘06, Interim Athletic Director Bob Pipe, and Rivers math teacher Keith Zalaski took first place for the second year in a row, edging out perennial favorites Mike Handler ’90, Matt Tobin ’90, Doug Wooldridge ’90 and Chris Welburn ’90, who came in second. Host Pat Daley ’84, Gary Todd ’84, Jim Corsi, and speaker Dara Torres, finished third.
This year’s raffle offered the ultimate Boston concert experience with tickets to four fabulous concerts at Fenway Park, donated by honoree Jeff Lowenstein, Ace Ticket, and 98.5 The SportsHub.
Over the past 17 years, the tournament has raised more than $1 million and has played a significant role in supporting dozens of Rivers students who have gone on to attend top colleges and universities around the world.
