Michael Young ’17 has been an anchor for both the varsity boys’ ice hockey and baseball teams throughout his time at Rivers, combining significant natural ability with a work ethic that has set him apart from his peers. A Boston Globe All-Scholastic and ISL Player of the Year this winter, Mike’s work off the ice, in the weight room, has earned him a 2017 All-American Athlete Award from the National Strength & Conditioning Association.
Rivers Strength & Conditioning Coach Paul Sanclemente, who has worked with Mike every season since Mike came to Rivers, nominated him for this award. The All-American Athlete of the Year Award Program recognizes collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength and conditioning.
“Mike’s determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence is a great model for all student-athletes at Rivers,” Coach Sanclemente said.
Mike is a five-year member and two-year captain of the boys’ varsity ice hockey team, four-year member and senior captain of the varsity baseball team. He was also the 2016 recipient of the Rivers Strength & Conditioning Dedication Award and has, throughout his time at Rivers, consistently earned a spot on the High Honor Roll. He signed a National Letter of Intent in the fall to play ice hockey at the University of Connecticut.
“I was extremely proud and honored to receive this award,” Mike said. “I train the way I do to do well in sports, but also just to stay healthy. Preparation is half the battle in most sports, so I believe it is crucial to do as much work as I can in the offseason so I am ready to perform during the season.”
Rivers’ Benson Fitness Center was recently the beneficiary of a generous $162,000 donation from the 2017 Parents’ League Auction. Funds will be used to upgrade the space and equipment in the fitness center so that Coach Sanclemente can help more athletes like Mike reach their fitness and sports performance goals.
