Artists and Writers Win 3 National Silver Medals

Rivers students earned three Silver Medals in the National Art and Writing Competition this month, after winning Gold Key awards in the 2017 Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Their work represented three of the ten Gold Key submissions that Rivers sent to the national competition in New York City.

Joelle Mentis ’18 received a Silver Medal in printmaking for “The Underrepresented,” Madeleine Foley ’22 in photography for “Bug on Blueberries,” and Apsara Balamurugan ’20 for her memoir entitled “8,500 Miles Closer.”

Established in 1923, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program recognizing accomplishments of students in grades 7 – 12. This year approximately 125 students from Massachusetts received national awards, at the gold and silver level. All National Award recipients earn a place on the National Recipient list.

In addition to Balamurugan, Foley, and Mentis, Isabel Hardy ’18, Sophie Jacobs ’18, Alex Klein ’18, Isabel Silvia ’18, Emily Smith ’18, and Hunter Taylor-Black ’18 had all earned Gold Keys in the state competition, and Mentis had received a second Gold Key in printmaking. Rivers students also garnered eight Silver Keys and eight Honorable Mentions in ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, poetry, personal essay/memoir, short story, and science fiction/fantasy.
