The 2016-17 winter athletic season at Rivers was filled with enough incredible moments to make it one of the best in the school’s history. The season came to a close on Sunday night in Manchester, NH, where the boys’ hockey team fell in the NEPSAC Stuart/Corkery Open Tournament Championship.
The boys’ varsity hockey team (25-5-1) became the first Independent School League Eberhart Division team to earn an invitation to the Stuart/Corkery Open Tournament, which takes the best eight teams in New England regardless of enrollment based on a formula that takes into account a team’s record and the quality of its opponents.
The Red Wings cruised past No. 5 Belmont Hill, 3-1, in the first round and No. 8 Phillips Exeter, 5-2, in the semifinals to earn a spot in the Stuart/Corkery Championship on Sunday evening at St. Anselm College against No. 3 Kimball Union Academy.
KUA struck first with two goals in the first period and never surrendered the lead en route to a 6-2 victory buoyed by two empty-net goals in the final minutes. Defensemen Tony Andreozzi ’19 and Mike Young ’17 were the goal scorers for the Red Wings, scoring in the second and third period, respectively.
Sunday was the final game for seniors Frank Ferrara ’17, Brendan Hamblet ’17, Charlie Lawrence ’17, Charlie Parsons ’17, Matt Paul ’17, Brett Rahbany ’17, Thomas Tresca ’17, and Mike Young. This group won three ISL Eberhart titles over their four years, reached two NEPSAC Championships, and posted a 75-31-10 record.
The girls’ varsity basketball team (20-6) fell in the NEPSAC Class A Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 59-39 decision to No. 3 Marianapolis Prep, who would go on to claim the NEPSAC Class A Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Saturday was the final game for senior captain Emma Roush ’17. Rivers amassed an impressive 81-16 record over Emma’s career.
The boys’ varsity basketball team (20-6) fell in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon, falling 73-49 to No. 1 Brooks School, who would go on to claim the NEPSAC Class B Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Saturday was the final game for seniors Derek Lamparelli ’17, Zack Lisman ’17, Jermaine Samuels ’17, and Azar Swain ’17. Over the last four years, this group claimed one ISL Championship, reached one NEPSAC Championship game, and amassed an impressive 76-29 record. Azar became the first Rivers basketball player to score 2,000 career points and he and Jermaine finish their careers as the No. 1 and No. 2 all-time leading scorers for the program with 2,185 and 1,998 career points, respectively.
