Rivers Combos Recognized at MAJE States

Both the Select 1A and 1B Combos competed at the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education State Competition on Wednesday, April 29, and their performances earned them the Gold and Silver Medal, respectively.

Rachel Hawley ’15, John Nydam ’15, and Jake Stenquist ’15 comprise the gold-medal-winning Select 1A Combo and add this most recent honor to recognition to the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition Spirit Award they received in February. Rachel, John, and Jake were all given Outstanding Musicianship Awards for their performances.

Bryan Cleveland ’15, Christopher Minklei ’15, Nick Revers ’15, and Saipriya Valoth ’15 performed in the silver-medal-winning Select 1B Combo. Bryan, Nick, and Saipriya each received an Outstanding Musicianship Award as well.

“Rivers had a strong presence today at the MAJE State combo competition, upholding our standard of excellence in musical performance,” said Philippe Crettien, who directs both combos. “I am very pleased with the students’ accomplishments.”

The Select 1A Combo will next perform on Sunday May 17, first at the Waban Music Festival and then at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston as part of the MAJE Gold Medal Showcase. Both performances will also include the Rivers Big Band, which won an MAJE Gold Medal in March.
