A beautiful mid-October weekend was the setting for Homecoming at Rivers this fall as students, parents, faculty, and alumni descended on Winter Street to watch games, enjoy food, and share in the community atmosphere that makes Rivers so special. The football and cross country teams kicked off the weekend on Friday while the rest of the teams took center stage on Saturday with games against Milton.
The weekend closed on Saturday night with the annual Upper School Homecoming Dance. The neon-themed dance benefitted Rivers Givers and thanks to a great student turnout, the student philanthropy group raised $663 that will go towards their goal of donating over $10,000 to non-profit groups that serve youth in our community.
Cross Country
The Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Cross Country teams hosted seven other schools for their homecoming races at Elm Bank in Wellesley. St. George’s, Tabor, and Southfield raced the Red Wings on the girls’ side, while St. George’s, St. Sebastian’s, Roxbury Latin, and Dexter raced the boys.
Elizabeth Thayer ‘14 ran a season-best time of 20:01 and finished 26 seconds ahead of the next-closest runner. Meghan Morgan’15 and Madeleine Morgan ’14 finished 10th and 14th, respectively, to help Rivers earn victories in its dual meet with Dexter.
James Jennings '15 was the top finisher for the boys’ squad, finishing 13th in a time of 18:31.80. Christian Schoen ’17 finished just behind Jennings in 14th place just six seconds later. The boys finished 1-2 for the day, falling to Roxbury Latin and St. George’s while defeating Dexter.
Football
The first evening football game ever held on campus at Rivers was a rousing success as a huge crowd watched Rivers defeat Groton, 24-13, in one of the Red Wings best performances of the season. Three touchdowns in a seven-minute, 50-second span during the first half was all Rivers needed to get the win.
Justen Voghel ’16 led the offense at quarterback, completing 16 of his 27 passes for 213 yards. Jamari Venter ’17 had a touchdown to go with 76 rushing yards and Carlin Haymon ’14 led the receiving corps with eight catches and 138 yards while Caleb Mahoney ’16 also caught a touchdown pass.
Nolan Kislauskis ’14 made the play of the game however, disrupting a Groton reverse in the backfield before grabbing a loose ball and running it in for a touchdown.
Field Hockey
The varsity field hockey team kicked off the Saturday slate of games against Milton with a disappointing 2-1 loss. The visitors scored twice in the first half to take the momentum early and by the time the Red Wings got it back it was too late.
Sammi Estes ’16 scored her first goal of the season with 26:55 to play in the second half on a penalty corner thanks to an assist from captain Maura Crowley ’14.
Girls Soccer
Kicking off just after the field hockey team, the varsity girls’ soccer team netted an early goal and held off Milton for a 1-0 win. Maggie McCabe ’16 scored the lone goal early in the contest and the Red Wings stout defensive line was able to keep Milton off the board for the rest of the game.
Boys Soccer
The last game of the day on Saturday kept the streak of one-goal games going as the boys soccer team fell to Milton, 3-2, on a late goal by the Mustangs. Cole Turissini ’15 and Salvatore Sprofera ’14 each scored for the Red Wings.
After going down 2-0 early in the game, Rivers kept the pressure on Milton and eventually scored with under a minute left in the first half on a strike by Turissini. The game remained tied until the final minutes when a free kick from Trevor Davock ’15 hit the post and found Sprofera’s head before ending up in the back of the net.
