The Rivers Varsity Field Hockey team beat Dana Hall in the semifinals of the NEPSAC New England Championship Tournament and went on to beat Tilton School in the finals on Sunday with a score of 2-1. Katherine Dutile ’14 scored both goals in the game, assisted by two of the senior captains: Janelle Ferrara ’12 and tournament MVP Elizabeth Hitti ’12.
After controlling play for the first half with an early goal, the Red Wings’ momentum carried them into a strong second half. Led by Julia Taylor ’12, the defense was able to shut down Tilton’s fast breaks while the offense dominated play on the other side of the field. Finally, with one second left on the clock, Dutile scored an exciting game winner on a pass from Ferrara right as the final horn sounded.
“The last 10 seconds really showed how well the team worked together all tournament long,” said Head Coach Emily Hamlin. “The girls filled roles they never have before and so many players contributed to our success in both games. They came together, believed they deserved the win, and put 60 minutes of effort into the game even after being totally exhausted.”
