Students debated resolutions on such topics as midterm elections, the effects of negative campaigning, and the prospect of changing the voting age to 16. Debate formats included “thought talks” (in the style of a roundtable discussion) and “formal debates” (with 6-minute persuasive speeches from both sides of an argument). At the end of the all-day event, Rordorf and Aptekman were selected from the teams in attendance through a peer vote.
“I am so proud of the new members of the team and their interest in politics and debate,” says Aptekman. Adds Rordorf, “I could not be more thrilled with the way things are progressing – we are making a name for ourselves in the JSA world and gaining new members each week!”
The team will attend several future JSA events, including the two-day Fall State Conference in November and the Washington D.C. Congress Convention in February.
