Rivers' literary magazine, The Current, won first place in the 2007 American Scholastic Press Association competition, which recognizes excellence in high school art/literary magazines. The ASPA Magazine Judge commented that The Current "shows the efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout designers, staff members and advisor." Additionally, Lauren Creedon '07 won a special award for Outstanding Artist for her composition "A Wrinkle in Time" featured in the magazine.
"Last year's editorial team took a risk with a very new and distinctive look for The Current 2007," said Current advisor and English teacher, Dr. Julian Willard. "Even before the magazine achieved this independent recognition, we were thrilled with the finished product. I'm also glad that the ASPA judge noted the impressive pool of literary and artistic talent at our school. These are exciting times for the arts here at Rivers."
Last year's Current staff included senior editor Lauren Bellucci '07, now attending Emerson College and magazine designer Sam Galison '07, now attending New York University as well as this year's senior editors Sarah Weintraub '08, Molly Jarvis '08, and Olivia Frosch '08. Other 2007 staff members included this year's junior editor, Suzanne Gray '09, Brian Hoefling '08, Brigitte Laukien '10, Kathryn Najarian '10, Jonathan Cryan '09, Stephanie King '10, Vanesa Pacheco '10, and Nicolas Giometti '07, now attending Dartmouth College.
"The editors from last year did an amazing job designing and editing a truly unique and beautiful magazine that, in itself is, a piece of artwork," said Weintraub. "Molly, Olivia, and I are hoping to make this year's magazine just as memorable."
