Six student artists recently received honors from The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, a competition that judges artwork in a variety of mediums from students across Massachusetts. Rivers, based on the size of the student body, was allowed to submit nine pieces of artwork, six of which won awards.

Senior Mark Goodrich earned a Gold Key for his ceramics piece, "Flow", which will move on and be considered at the national level. Junior Jordan Balcom was awarded a Silver Key for her photograph "Liquid Fingers" and classmate Lila Knisely also earned a Silver Key for her print "Satellites."

Two Middle School students were also recognized by the competition including eighth-grader Andre Tilahun, who received a Silver Key for his photograph, "Self Portrait with Straw in My Mouth."

In addition, senior Alex Harrison earned an Honorable Mention for his photograph, "Modulation of Light."

"The entire Rivers Arts department deliberated for a long time about which nine pieces to send, but now we couldn't be happier with the results," said David Saul, Visual Arts Department Chair. "The Globe typically honors only about one third of the work that gets submitted so it's wonderful to see that two thirds of the work Rivers submitted was honored."

All Silver and Gold Key winners will have their work on exhibit until February 25 at the State Transportation Building. Silver and Gold Key recipients will also be honored at a ceremony in Boston on February 11.
