In early October, construction crews tore down the old red barn that, for several decades, along with Blackwell House, provided classroom space for the music school. Once completed, the new music building will resemble the architectural style of an old New England barn.
The school is also working with an outside designer that will help choose the right elements to create a unique and sophisticated look for the building's interior. Once complete, the 15,000- square foot music building will include a 160-seat recital hall, a recording studio, a music listening library, multiple teaching studios and practice rooms as well as orchestra, jazz and choral rooms.
On October 15th, members of The Rivers community gathered on the lawn at the front of the school to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Rivers music building. Rivers Music School Director David Tierney spoke passionately about the history of The Rivers Music School and how important the construction of the new building is to both The Music School and The Rivers School as a whole.
"On the surface the building will provide facilities for both the premier music program at The Rivers School as well as the outstanding program at The Rivers Music School. The new facility will not only unite these two programs under one roof but will also provide a facility that mirrors the quality and excellence of these two music programs," said Mr. Tierney.
Along with Mr. Tierney, Board of Trustees president Roy MacDowell and Head of School Tom Olverson also addressed the group of trustees, donors, faculty and administrators at Sunday's groundbreaking.
Construction of the music center is expected to take 11 to 12 months, with the opening slated for fall 2007.
