Rivers Girls’ Soccer Continues On Winning Streak

Rivers girls’ soccer continued their winning streak with a 5-0 win over a competitive St. Paul’s team on September 30.

Rivers girls’ soccer continued their winning streak with a 5-0 win over a competitive St. Paul’s team on September 30. Rivers, the visiting team, possessed the ball well in the first half and held their opponents to a 0-0 score. Early in the second half, sophomore Megan Delaney scored the first goal with a header shot. Junior Suzanne Jensen had the second goal off sophomore Adrienne Anderson’s free kick. Anderson also scored a goal from an assist by freshman Shannon McSweeney. Freshman Sarah Sweeney had two breakaway goals with assists by junior Nicole Stenquist and freshman Emily Hoberman to solidify the team’s win. Sophomore goalie Lauren Glynn had a stellar day in goal with nine saves.

On Wednesday, October 4, the Red Wings took on Noble and Greenough School at their home field in Dedham. Both teams were extremely well matched and ended in 1-1 tie. Although Nobles was ahead 1-0 at the half, Anderson tied the game with a penalty kick in the second half. Glynn played a very aggressive game in goal and had seven saves to hold off the Nobles’ offense.

Cross Country
On Saturday, September 30 the cross country team took on three top I.S.L schools at Thayer Academy. The Red Wings ran against the Governor’s Academy and Roxbury Latin as well as Thayer Academy. In a fast race, all four Rivers runners ran their personal best times. Sophomore David Shapiro ran 18:11, sophomore Camden Griffith ran 18:38, senior William Quayle ran 19:11, and freshman Connor Chang ran 22:08, 3 minutes faster than his time the week before. The girls’ team also had a good day on Saturday and showed both individual progress and strong results. Sophomore Jennifer Pollan ran very well and came in third overall in her race. Sophomores Louise Blake, Leigh Carroll and Alexa Kopelman as well as juniors Rebecca Burns and Lori Suvajian all had their personal best times by quite a large margin. The final scores for the tri-meet were Governor's Academy 23, Rivers 33; and Thayer, 20 Rivers 40.

The Red Wings ran hard against the St. George’s School on their home course on Wednesday, October 4, but came up short losing 23-36. Shapiro ran a very nice race, keeping control from about two miles on, to win his first race. Griffith came in fourth while sophomore Jonathan Cryan came in eighth place.

Field Hockey
Rivers field hockey faced a challenging Noble and Greenough team on Wednesday, October 4. Although Rivers played an aggressive offensive and defensive game, the team lost 3-2. Nobles came out strong early in the game and scored the first goal. Then, with only seven minutes to play in the first half, sophomore Rebecca Nichols, off of a pass from junior Molly Troy, carried the ball 60 yards for a one on one with the goalie and drove in the Red Wings’ first goal. With one minute to play, Rivers had a chance to get ahead with a penalty corner but Nobles’ goalkeeper stepped on the ball and Rivers got the penalty shot call. Junior Manya Steinfeld took the shot but it went just left of the goal cage. Nobles came out strong in the second half and scored twice more to make the score 3-1. With eight minutes left in the game, sophomore Jacqueline Gannon deflected the ball off of a shot by senior Stephanie Shaw to bring the score to 3-2. Stenifeld along with junior Kendall Todd played very well defensively.

Football
On Saturday, September 30, Red Wings football played extremely well against a tough St. Paul’s team but lost 47-21. Senior Cherron Kerr rushed 22 times for 90 yards and had 8-16 completions for 170 yards. In addition, Kerr threw two touchdown passes, one to senior Mark Goodrich and the other to junior Matthew McGuinness. Goodrich, receiving, caught five passes for 118 yards. In addition, junior Sean McGahan had a touchdown run for 28 yards.
