In an assembly last week, 11 seniors were named National Merit Commended or Semi-Finalist scholars.
In an assembly last week, Head of Upper School, Patti Carbery announced that Rivers set a new school record for having the most National Merit Commended and Semi-Finalist scholars in the school's history. The 11 seniors, representing 15 percent of the Class of 2007, beat previous school records that had been set by the Classes of 2005 and 2006.
Each fall, when juniors take the PSAT Exam, they also enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, a competition that grants recognition and scholarships to a select number of students throughout the country. Out of the approximately 1.4 million juniors who took the PSAT exam last year, 34,000 earned distinction as National Merit Commended Students for their outstanding scores.
The following 10 seniors were recognized for their outstanding performance on the PSAT exam and were named National Merit Commended Students:
Zach Barnett
Laura Bellucci
Lauren Creedon
Brett Deware
Sam Galison
Sam Harrison
Miles Jacoby
Bryan Kaufman
Steve Rizoli
Rob Shanfeld
In addition, senior Will Quayle was named a National Merit Semi-Finalist for his superb performance on the PSAT. He joins an elite group of 16,000 students, or less than 1% from each state, who will go on to compete to be National Merit Finalists, with the possibility of earning merit scholarships.
"I’m so proud of what these students have accomplished," said Ms. Carbery. "Although this award recognizes their outstanding accomplishment on the PSAT, I believe it really pays tribute the students' academic achievements throughout their years at Rivers. These eleven seniors have added so much to the intellectual life of this campus."
