This spring, Rivers students have blown away the competition at art and music contests across the state. Beginning in April, twenty-nine pieces of artwork from Rivers students received recognition at the annual SISAL competition held at the Roxbury Latin School. The SISAL competition shows student artwork from over twenty independent schools.

Rivers students received top prizes in 7 out of 14 categories. First place winners included: Casey James, Lauren Creedon, Stolle Singleton, Max Maguire, Robby Merrell, Shoban Pothula and Cara Bigony. Second prize winners included: Louise Blake, Max Maguire and Alexandra Parkinson. Third prize winners included: Sophia Janowitz, Rachel Tovin, John Matthews and Matthew Robinson. Honorable mention recipients included: Nina Birger, Sadie Robertson, Sophia Janowitz, Max Maguire, Alix Strasnick, Rachel Tovin, Sarah Bailey, Hannah Shambroom, Bill Duplisea, Yekaterina Gourinovitch, Chris Whittier, Kristina Ceven, Steffi Shaw and Ainsley Mallows.

"Rivers won an incredible array of top prizes in all categories, including sweeping the competition in both the Ceramics and Print Making categories," said David Saul, Art Department Chair. "SISAL is a great competition for a school like Rivers that has such a strong arts program because it gives us an opportunity to submit more work than some other competitions."

Rivers students continued to shine during April as members of the Rivers Jazz Choir and the Rivers Select Jazz Combo 1 performed at the IAJE competition at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and earned silver medals in each competition.

Jazz choir members sophomore Molly Troy and senior Tessa Drake received a special citation for outstanding musicianship. In addition, junior bassist and Rivers conservatory student Leo McDonnell received a citation for outstanding musicianship for his contributions to the Select Jazz Combo 1. Accolades were also given for the balance of the rhythm section as well as the dynamic range and blend of senior saxophonist Derek Stenquist and senior trombonist Tavis Doucette.

On May 13, The Rivers School Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles competed at the MICCA festival at Concord-Carlisle High School and took home both gold and silver medals at the completion. Schools from all over eastern Massachusetts sent their small ensembles to work with judges who rehearse briefly with the group and award them gold, silver, bronze, or participation medals.

The full Rivers Upper School Orchestra, directed by faculty members Magdalena Richter and Dan Shaud, earned a silver medal for playing Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony" and excerpts from Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite".

A mixed quintet of Chamber Ensemble members including senior Michelle Chou (violin), juniors Alex Barstow (viola) and Hillary Ain (cello) and sophomores Meredith Grabscheid (flute) and Juliana Horn (viola) earned a silver medal for their performance of a piece by Johann Amon.

Juliana Horn also received a gold medal for her solo viola performance of a piece by Bloch. A trio consisting of junior Alexandra Byer (flute), freshman Molly Barstow (flute) and junior Will Quayle (cello) earned a gold medal for their performance of Haydn's first "London Trio".
