Rivers girls' varsity hockey team was explosive in its regular season opener Wednesday. The girls took a 9-2 win over Pingree School on home ice. Sophomore Katelyn Landry had a hat trick, while junior Sarah Kohn made two goals and one assist. Cailin Walsh, Becca Nichols, Jillian Dempsey and Jackie Bouchie each contributed a goal, and goalie Alix Strasnick made nine saves.
Girls' Basketball
Rivers girls' varsity basketball team opened its Independent School League play with a 36-31 win at Groton School on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Anna Littman-Quinn scored a team-high 16 points, while Lila Knisely, a sophomore, made eight rebounds.
Against St. Mark’s School Saturday, the girls fought back from an early 12-0 deficit to lose 48-50 in overtime. Littman-Quinn was again the top scorer with 22 points. Senior center Deanna Cox had a career-high 14 points and a strong defensive game.
Coach Bob Pipe called the game a loss in score only. "It was a great game to be a part of," he said. "This kind of effort from players is why you coach."
With its 44-29 win over Berwick on Dec. 2, the girls' basketball team owns a 2-1 record going into the 36th annual Rivers Holiday Tournament on Thursday. The girls’ first game will be at 7:30 p.m. against Dana Hall.
Boys' Basketball
Rivers boys' varsity basketball team beat Belmont Hill 45-32 at home on Wednesday. Senior B.J. Dunne scored 16 points, shooting 8 out of 11. Center Jamal Jackson led the team with 12 rebounds, 11 of them in the second half.
On Saturday the Red Wings lost a tough game to a very strong St. Mark’s team, 30-73. Jackson led Rivers’ scoring with 14 points, and junior Steve Rizoli had six rebounds. The boys face Pomfret School at 9:00 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Rivers Holiday Tournament.
Boys' Hockey
Rivers boys' varsity hockey team dropped a game to Groton 3-1 on Saturday. In the second period senior Tim Bigelow scored on a break-away to tie the game, but a penalty early in the final period proved costly as Groton scored the eventual game-winning goal during their man advantage. Senior Scott Barchard made a number of key saves in goal. This weekend the team will play in a tournament hosted by Pingree and Brooks Schools.
