Rivers’ varsity athletes had a busy—and successful—weekend at the start of winter break, going 12-0 in four tournaments, and garnering three championships. Boys’ hockey won their first-ever championship in the St. Sebastian’s Tournament, while both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won the Rivers Holiday Tournament. Girls' hockey won their three matches at the Southfield showcase.
Boys’ varsity hockey faced off against Brunswick on Friday in the first-round game at St. Sebastian’s, and ended both regulation and the five-minute-overtime with a tie of 2-2. In order to determine who would advance to the winner’s bracket in the tournament, the teams faced off in a shoot-out, where Rivers beat Brunswick by 2-1.
Their second game, against Williston Northampton School, was not quite the nail-biter, ending in a 4-0 win. Finally they faced off against host team St. Sebastian’s, winning 3-2 in overtime. The game was tied 1-1 at the half, before Rivers went up 2-1 with a goal by Tommy Miller, followed just minutes later by a St. Seb’s goal to tie it again. The overtime goal by Tyler Capello secured the championship for the Red Wings. Click

On December 14, the 48th Annual Rivers Holiday Tournament tipped off in Benson Gymnasium with a field of 12 teams, including Beaver Country Day School, Bradford Christian Academy, The Gunnery, Holderness School, Marianapolis Prep School, Millbrook School, Northfield Mt. Hermon School, Putnam Science Academy, and Taft School.
The girls took on Taft on Thursday and held them off for a 51-39 final score. Friday’s match-up against Northfield Mount Hermon was equally successful with a 57-49 final score. Saturday’s championship game pitted them against Putnam Science Academy which gave them a run for their money, going down to the wire for a 58-55 win and the 2017 Holiday Tournament title. Tess Sussman was named MVP, while Maren Durant joined Sha’raya Haines and Kayla Robinson from Putnam Science and Olivia Summiel from Marianapolis for the all-star team.
The boys handily beat The Gunnery, 70-33, in their first game, during which Kyle Butler tossed three-pointer after three-pointer, much to the crowd’s delight. On Friday, they beat Holderness, placing them in the finals against Marianapolis in a neck-and-neck game on Saturday that ended well for Rivers, 65-58. The Tournament MVP went to Tyler Aronson, and teammate Cameron Tongue joined Philman Gebrehiwet from Holderness, and Jared Ullstrom and Dhayln Sanders-Dyers from Marianapolis on the all-star team.
Meanwhile girls’ hockey participated in the Dexter Southfield Holiday Tournament—a three-game showcase—where they faced off against—and beat—Millbrook (5-1) on Friday, Middlesex (4-0) on Saturday morning, and host team Southfield (4-0) in the final game of the tournament on Saturday evening.
