Rivers Campus A-Buzz with Summer Activity

The Rivers campus—from the shores of Nonesuch Pond to MacDowell Field House to the Rivera Recital Hall—has been overflowing with kids of all ages since the opening of Rivers’ various summer programs in June. There’s been something to appeal to every taste and talent, from traditional day camp activities to a college-level entrepreneurship program taught by BU professor Greg Stoller ’87.
For decades, Rivers has offered two day camp programs—Rivers Day Camp and Camp Nonesuch—each with its own unique style and following. Both take full advantage of their location on Nonesuch Pond to offer swimming and boating, and each includes a wide range of activities from arts and crafts to archery. Enrollment is still open for the remaining sessions at both Camp Nonesuch, which runs through August 18, and at Rivers Day Camp, which runs through August 18 and offers an additional Adventure Week of day trips from August 21-25.

For those interested in pursuing academic interests, Rivers faculty members have been teaching classes both online and on campus, beginning with the Innovation & Design course taught by math teacher Elizabeth Wendorf which gave students a chance to try their hand at identifying and solving theoretical and real world design problems. They were charged with designing an ideal classroom, then took those skills to a local non-profit organization —Creative Start in Waltham—to apply them to challenges in that venue. On a higher level, Upper School students in the Business Planning: Entrepreneurship in Action course have been partnering with professionals in a number of businesses to address issues particular to those industries and institutions.

Also popular were Computer Programming, the Writing Workshop for Middle School students,   and the on-line Experiential Writing classes. There are still openings for the second section of the Foundations of Algebra class from August 21-25—due to popular demand!—and the Exploring Mathematics class from August 14-18 as well. Overall, the courses are intended to engage passionate students, strengthen academic skills, explore new material, and challenge students to think critically.

Athletes with a serious interest in honing their skills and maintaining fitness in the off-season are enjoying soccer and basketball programs at both middle and high school level. Programs include Boys' Soccer Skills and Strengthening Program (middle and high school); Girls' Basketball Skills and Strengthening Program (middle and high school); and Boys' Basketball Skills and Strengthening Program (middle and high school).

The Rivers School Conservatory has been offering sessions throughout the summer, and will be offering its morning Summer Orchestra program from August 14-18. Wrapping up are two two-week classical and jazz sessions. Students of wind, string, or brass instruments, and piano were placed in chamber ensembles with students of similar ability, with a focus on building a community of musicians. The jazz immersion program welcomed both students new to jazz/improvisation and more experienced players.
