This Summer At Rivers: New Media and Digital Identity Online Course
The internet has fundamentally changed the way the world consumes and produces media by putting the tools needed to create content at the fingertips of each and every person. This summer, Rivers will offer students the opportunity to learn about these tools and how to use them to become more responsible media consumers and manage a digital identity of their own with the summer course “New Media and Digital Identity.”
This online course will meet twice per week from June 14 until July 26 and will be taught by Nate Green, an Upper School History teacher at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia. Mr. Green has taught this course at St. Paul’s School for the last three summers and is an advocate of incorporating social media and educational technology to enhance the classroom experience.
“I think this is a wonderful course that is perfectly designed to deal with things that are going on in the media right now with terms like ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts,’” Mr. Green said. “I want each student to be an informed, digitally responsible citizens and gain an understanding of things like data mining, censorship, branding, and the future of the internet so that they can be attractive candidates for college, for internships, and as professionals.”
The first part of the course will focus on New Media and what Mr. Green calls “passion-based learning.” Students will identify a topic about which they are passionate and then develop a personalized learning network of social media, podcasts, and other types of digital media that will help them learn more about that particular space.
In the second part of the course, Mr. Green will help students develop a Digital Identity for themselves that will help them network with people who share their passion for their chosen topic. By digesting, creating, and analyzing different types of content, students will leave the course with a feeling of empowerment to use their personalized learning network to pursue their passion.
