Jazz Ensembles Earn Awards From MAJE, Berklee Competitions

The Rivers Big Band competed in the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE) Senior District Competition on Wednesday, March 1, and earned a Gold Medal along with three individual awards.

Alex Gomez ’17 (saxophone), Joe Nedder ’18 (trombone), and Michael Manasseh ’19 (drums) each received Outstanding Musician awards for their performance at the competition, which was held at Nipmunc Regional High School. With this result, the Big Band moves on to the next stage of the competition, MAJE State Finals on March 18.

“The band has constantly improved this year and that is what matters most. We have a solid foundation which we can continue to build on and develop moving forward,” said band director Philippe Crettien. “We are all extremely proud of the students’ accomplishments and proud to be members of the Rivers Big band.”

The Big Band took 4th Place and the Select 1A Combo finished 5th at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival on February 11, beating out more than 240 other schools from around the country. Joe Nedder received individual recognition for his performance at that competition as a part of both the Big Band and the Select 1A Combo.
