Seniors Find Success in College Admissions

Senior year can be a stressful time, but Rivers seniors can feel good about their recent accomplishments: 100% of the school’s 93 seniors have received an offer of college admission, and, with ED2 now in, 65% are enrolled. These results, said Director of College Counseling Dave Lyons ’99, P’30, reinforce the college office’s approach of preparing students to engage with early admission rounds whenever these practices align with the colleges on their lists.

Among the 112 schools that have offered Rivers students admission thus far are Boston College, Bowdoin, Brown, the University of Chicago, Columbia, Hamilton, Harvard, Middlebury, Michigan, the University of North Carolina, Tufts, Washington University in St. Louis, and Yale.

At the recent State of the School event, Head of School Ryan S. Dahlem shared the complete list of admissions to date. While it includes many top-tier colleges, Dahlem said that what stood out to him is that the list is long, with a wide variety of institutions that demonstrates Rivers’ commitment to matching students with best-fit colleges.

With initial junior family meetings behind them, the college counseling team had the opportunity to visit some colleges and universities in the last few weeks before break. Ian Watson was invited to programs at SMU and TCU and also visited Tulane, where he enjoyed dinner with six Rivers alums. Dana Warshauer traveled to Scotland, where she was hosted by the University of Edinburgh and St. Andrews, spending a few days on both campuses and connecting with a Rivers alum studying at St. Andrews. Lyons spent some time with admissions contacts at UVM and took a crew of Rivers alums out to dinner in Burlington. He also was able to sit in on an admissions committee meeting at Middlebury, which he called “a wonderful professional development experience.”

Lyons noted that the Class of 2024 has done “an exceptional job of approaching their processes with fit in mind. Seventy percent of students who applied Early Decision or Restricted Early Action were admitted, which indicates that the majority of the class has been admitted to their first choice.

“Most importantly for us,” he continued, “they have been thoughtful about finding the right community for them. We are proud of this crew, and know more good news will be coming over the course of the next month.”
