Winter Sports: Report from the Rink, the Court, and the Mountain

Late January was a great time to be a Red Wing! We’ve passed the halfway point in the winter season, and Rivers athletes are going strong.

On Wednesday, January 24, varsity Alpine Skiing had its third race of the season. Girls placed second in the ISL, and the boys held steady at fourth. Nina Martin ’28 (2nd), Hannah Piche ’26 (4th), and Liv Martin ’26 (8th) all placed in the top 10 for the varsity girls, and Liam Keane ’26 won the varsity boys’ meet.

Also on Wednesday, boys’ varsity hockey defeated Roxbury Latin 5-1 to improve to 10-6-1 on the season. Will Hatten ’25 scored three goals and made one assist, Justin Graf ’26 scored one goal and made two assists, and Brett Stone ’24 scored one goal, while Jacob Kulas ’24 and Evan Handler ’26 each contributed one assist.

And girls’ varsity basketball defeated Lawrence 64-52 to improve to 8-6 on the season. Natalia Hall-Rosa ’25 scored 18 points and had two rebounds, one assist, and five steals; Chase Anderson ’25 scored 16 points and had two rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Grace O’Sullivan ’25 scored 11 points and had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Rissi Smith ’25 scored 8 points and had eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals; and Payton Richard ’24 scored six points and had nine rebounds, seven assists, and one steal. Also on Wednesday, girls’ varsity hockey fell to Thayer Academy 2-0.

The wins continued on Friday. Girls’ varsity hockey defeated Phillips Exeter 2-1 to improve to 6-7-1 on the season. Goals were scored by Sophie Rousell ’24 and Taylor Ehler ’25, with her first career goal. Ellie Biegel ’26 contributed a strong performance in goal, notching 31 saves.

The same evening, girls’ varsity basketball defeated New Hampton 62-40 to improve to 9-6 on the season. Natalia Hall-Rosa ’25 scored 16 points and had nine rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks; Payton Richard ’24 scored 16 points and had two rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Chase Anderson ’25 scored 12 points and had six rebounds and four blocks; Grace O’Sullivan ’25 scored 11 points and had four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks; Rissi Smith ’25 scored 5 points and had one rebound, six assists, and two steals.

Boys’ varsity basketball defeated Northfield Mount Hermon 67-64 to improve to 13-2 on the season. Andrew Alekseyenko ’25 scored 21 points and had nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals; Ryan Altman ’25 had 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists; Jay Jones ’25 scored 11 points and had four rebounds, four assists, and two steals; Amir Lindsey ’24 scored 7 points and had two rebounds, four assists, and one steal; Robby Fiore ’25 scored 6 points and had three assists; and Jordy Schwartz ’25 scored 4 points and had two rebounds and one assist.

And rounding out the Friday wins, boys’ varsity hockey defeated Nobles 7-4 in the first Friday Night Lights game of the winter season, to improve to 11-6-1. Jacob Kulas ’24 scored two goals, while Stevie Rousell ’26, Justin Graf ’26, Will Hatten ’25, Finn Sears ’28, and Ryan Ferguson ’24 each scored one goal.

On Saturday, girls’ varsity basketball defeated Middlesex to improve to 10-6 on the season. Natalia Hall-Rosa ’25 scored 15 points and had six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block; Grace O’Sullivan ’25 scored 10 points and had two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block; Lily Finton ’26 scored 8 points and had two rebounds and one assist in her return from injury; Chase Anderson ’25 scored 7 points and had two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block; Payton Richard ’24 scored six points and had three rebounds, two assists, and one steal; and Rissi Smith ’25 scored 5 points and had three rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Girls’ varsity hockey fell to Milton 2-1 on Saturday. A goal was scored by Lindsay Morin ’25. Also on Saturday, boys’ varsity hockey fell to Middlesex 5-3, with goals scored by Jacob Kulas ’24 (2) and Freddy Meyer ’27.

Last night, on the final evening of the month, Rivers teams notched victories in boys’ basketball (winning 75-58 against Governors to improve to 14-2 on the season), girls’ basketball (41-34 against BB&N, improving to 11-6 on the season), and girls’ hockey (a 5-0 shutout, improving to 7-8-1 on the season). Boys’ varsity hockey fell to Groton 1-2.

Also on Wednesday, cross-country skiing competed in an eight-team meet at the Dublin School. Notable finishes included Ulrika Karlsson ’27 (19th), Alex Young ’25 (21st), and Noah Springhorn ’24 (25th).
