Homecoming 2014 Lights Up The Night

The Rivers campus was once again abuzz with school pride as students, parents, alumni, and friends came together for Homecoming 2014. The events kicked off on Friday afternoon with the cross-country race at Elm Bank and came to a close Saturday night with the annual Homecoming football game under the lights on Waterman Field.

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams each ran solid races at Elm Bank on Friday afternoon, earning wins over Dexter and Southfield, respectively. Caroline Phelps ’18 finished third out of 76 runners in the girls’ race with a time of 19:43 while Nic Stathos ’18 paced the boys’ with a time of 17:52 and a 15th place finish.

On Friday night, the field hockey team took on ISL leaders and defending NEPSAC Class B champion St. Mark’s under the lights on Waterman Field. Jamie Navoni ’15 opened the scoring in the first half, but St. Mark’s tied the game shortly after and the teams remained even for the remainder of regulation. The Red Wings continued their strong play throughout overtime, but St. Mark’s was able to score with 57.5 seconds left in the extra period to secure a 2-1 win.

Saturday’s action kicked off with the girls’ varsity soccer team taking on St. Mark’s in an important ISL contest. After a scoreless first half, the Red Wings opened the scoring on an unassisted goal from Liz Webber ’16 then quickly went up 2-0 when Toni Eidmann ’15 scored from a Maggie McCabe ’16 assist.

The boys’ soccer team took on St. Mark’s and went down 1-0 just before the halftime break, but the Red Wings kept pushing and eventually pulled even through a late penalty kick from Trevor Davock ’15. A second penalty kick just before the final whistle hit the crossbar and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

On Saturday night, the football team hosted St. George’s under the lights on Waterman Field and played a fantastic all-around game to earn a 31-20 victory. Justen Voghel ’16 threw two touchdown passes and kicked a 37-yard field goal; Jamari Venter ’17 scored two touchdowns, including the game-sealing interception return; Azar Swain ’17 scored on a fumble return; and Caleb Mahoney ’16 added a receiving touchdown.

Both Friday and Saturday night featured wonderful renditions of the National Anthem performed by Rivers seniors. James Nydam ’15 sang on Friday night prior to the field hockey game and Marissa Birne ’15 sang prior to Saturday night’s football game.

Congratulations to the participating teams for their exciting performances on the field. We hope to see everyone back on campus next fall for the Centennial Homecoming!
