Rivers again performed well in the national Green Cup Challenge this year, achieving a 4.8 percent reduction in electricity use, in addition to last year’s 15.7% reduction.

From January 21 to February 18, Rivers participated in the energy competition, which was open to schools all over North America. Students’ electricity reduction translates into a 9,964-pound decrease in the amount of CO2 use to power the school during the past month.

“Our baseline usage was already quite low, especially after last year’s amazing results, which made it harder to have a significant reduction again this year,” said science teacher Emily Stevens, who serves as coordinator of the Footprint Focus Group. “However, we noticed many more people shutting off common space lights without constant reminders this year, so it definitely seems to be much more embedded in the culture here.”
