Our new Center for Science & Visual Arts will solidify Rivers’ commitment to providing our students with innovative and experiential learning opportunities on a daily basis, advancing our teachers' development of engaging coursework across multiple disciplines. Both the building and its cutting-edge equipment and functionality will be a major step in keeping Rivers firmly positioned at the forefront of 21st century learning.
The new building is designed to provide transformative, dedicated space for Upper School Science and Visual Arts. In addition, it will create prominent community gathering areas, as well as space for collaborative work and gallery areas. The additional space will enable expanded access to courses and enhance experiential learning opportunities in science and visual arts.
The cost of the new building and related projects is roughly $23 Million. With the full backing of the administration and faculty, 100 percent of our trustees and a small group of donors have committed nearly 80 percent of the total costs for this project.
The Board endorsed this project because it signifies Rivers’ unwavering commitment to academics and to providing our students with outstanding innovative and experiential learning opportunities. Not only will these new spaces enhance classroom learning, they will provide opportunities for students to work independently on art and design projects and to conduct self-directed science research projects in a central, free-standing lab designed specifically for student-generated, faculty-guided research.
Critical infrastructure work will begin in earnest in June, after graduation, as we prepare the site for construction.
We are optimistic that we might break ground on the Center for Science & Visual Arts in the late summer or early fall. Ultimately, the timing will be contingent on permitting and our continued fundraising success. If we are successful and can stay to that schedule, our projected move-in date to the new building could be as early as January 1, 2020.
