Student Life

A student’s journey through Rivers is a wandering journey, a journey of self-discovery and exploration. Outside of the classroom, Rivers offers students a wide variety of opportunities to collect new experiences, develop hidden talents, and uncover new passions. Read on to learn more.

Clubs & Activities

In addition to participating in sports at either a competitive or recreational level, students have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of other activities. They can join any number of existing clubs, or take the initiative to create a new club. They can get involved in theater or music, or they can try their hand at writing for the school newspaper or the school cultural magazine. There are lots of choices, and everyone is encouraged to experiment and try new things.

Service Learning

The concept of community service is not only baked into the curriculum at The Rivers School, but it is supported as an extracurricular activity through a robust Outreach Program that gives students the opportunity to volunteer their time working with local non-profit organizations and people in need. The Rivers Givers is a particularly popular program, and students even have the opportunity to participate in service trips such as last year’s trip to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana.

Off-Campus Trips

Students regularly get the opportunity to participate in off-campus experiences. These experiences can be as simple as day-long field trips into Chinatown or to a New Bedford whaling museum, or they can be a multi-week summer or Spring Break trip to such locations as Spain, France, China, Montana or San Francisco. There are even opportunities to participate in internship programs at hospitals, high-tech firms, and other organizations.

Diversity & Inclusivity

Rivers is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive community and to educating its students to be engaged, thoughtful agents of positive change. Toward that end, Rivers provides students with the opportunity to join affinity groups and participate in initiatives that are focused on issues of diversity and social justice, and encourages them to be active participants in events like the MLK Jr. Day assembly and the Day of Consideration. The school’s commitment to this effort was most recently demonstrated through the establishment of a new Center for Community & Civic Engagement.

Wellness & Counseling

The Rivers School motto of Excellence with Humanity underscores its commitment to putting the health and well-being of its students at the core of its educational philosophy. The school offers wellness educational programming that is comprised of school-wide, division, and grade-level initiatives to promote effective decision making and to help students develop effective self-care skills. It also employs a skilled team of counselors who work closely with the advisory system to ensure every student is known and cared for.

Dining Services

Each day, The Rivers School dining staff provides our community with exceptional lunches that earn rave reviews from the entire community. Managed by Flik Independent School Dining, our dining services team provides meals that not only are nutritious, but are imaginative and delicious. They employ sustainable dining processes, and even source as many vegetables as possible from the school’s own Freight Farm program.
