Winter Sports Wrap-up

Rivers’ winter season came to an end with the boys’ varsity hockey team claiming the ISL Eberhardt Division title for the fourth time in five years and the girls’ varsity ski team clinching the #2 spot in the NEPSAC Championships. All four basketball and hockey teams made it as far as the semifinals in post-season play, and two teams went on to the finals. In fact, Rivers was the only school to have all four teams in the top four seeds in their divisions. The boys’ hockey team also received the coveted Eberhardt League Team Sportsmanship Award. Aidan Porter ’18 and Tess Sussmann ’18 were named League MVPs in hockey and basketball respectively, and both were named Boston Globe All-Scholastics.

Rivers’ girls’ varsity hockey, the #1 seed, beat #8 Canterbury 3-2 on Wednesday, then went on to beat #4 Worcester Academy 5-3 in the semi-finals. They fell to #2 Vermont Academy in the finals on Sunday. Boys’ varsity hockey, seeded #2, beat #7 Cushing on Wednesday 4-1, then fell to #3 Kimball Union 2-1 in the final 30 seconds of overtime in the semifinals.

Boys’ varsity basketball, seeded #2, beat #7 St. Luke’s in the quarterfinals 69-65, and #3 Canterbury in the semifinals 83-65.  They fought hard but lost to #1 Brooks in the finals. The #3 girls’ basketball team faced #2 Tabor Academy in the semifinals in their division and lost in a tough match-up on Wednesday. During the regular season, Tess Sussman and Tyler Aronson ’18 both passed the 1000-point milestone in their Rivers careers.

Contributing to the 2nd Place finish for the girls’ ski team were outstanding races by Georgia Freeland ’18 who came in third in the grand slalom and fifth in the slalom. Other team members contributing to the final standings were Grace Bradley ’18, Lindsey Filoon ’21, Sarah Bargamian ’18, and Izzy Silvia ’18.

Rivers’ Nordic ski team competed at the Championship meet at Proctor Academy. Skier Stephanie Dailey ’19 finished 18th in New England in the 5.4k freestyle mass start race, and her teammates all finished within the top 30. The team finished 6th in New England.

In alumnae athletic news, Yale senior forward Jen Berkowitz, Rivers Class of 2014, was named first team All-Ivy League for her role in leading their women’s basketball team to its first Ivy League Tournament appearance. Berkowitz, who recently racked up 1,000 points for her college career, is second on the team in scoring (14.4 points per game, sixth in the Ivy League) and leads the team in rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game, eighth in the Ivy League). She also has the league’s best field goal percentage (.556). She is on pace for career highs in all three categories.

Berkowitz, a pre-med history of science, medicine and public health major, was named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week, earned honorable mention All-Ivy League recognition last season, and is the first Yale player to earn first team All-Ivy honors since in 2014.
