Coach Bob Pipe Logs 300 Wins

Director of Athletics and Head Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach Bob Pipe scored his 300th career win at Rivers on Saturday, January 20, in a 51-42 game against Loomis Chaffee. Players, parents, and fans honored Coach Pipe and the occasion by presenting him with the game ball, which the players gathered round to sign as soon as the game ended. However, this was not the first milestone for Coach Pipe this academic year: he had his 200th career win as Head Boys’ Varsity Soccer Coach with a 1-0 victory over St. George’s on November 3. All in all, it’s been a very good year for Coach Pipe.

Pipe, who became the school’s Director of Athletics in July 2017, has been a member of Rivers’ athletic department since 1998. A Natick native, Pipe played soccer at Babson College and then semi-professionally for the Boston Storm, and coached at Babson and Northeastern Universities before arriving at Rivers.

After posting a 5-11-1 record in his first year, Pipe led the boys’ soccer team to three NEPSAC Championships in four years, highlighted by the program’s first Independent School League Championship and NEPSAC Class A Championship in 2001.

Pipe took the helm of the girls’ basketball program in 1999 and has developed that program to one of the strongest in New England, winning three NEPSAC Championships in four years from 2008-2012. Overall, he has coached 47 student-athletes who have gone to play college sports and three who have gone on to play professionally.

“In his 20 years of coaching, Bob has developed teams that exemplify the best of Rivers – teams that are highly competitive, deeply committed to one another, and who represent Rivers’ highest standards of sportsmanship,” said Head of School Ned Parsons. “Bob has competed for and won New England championships, but he has also worked through many ‘building years,’ patiently bringing out the best in each player, no matter the team’s record or short-term prospects.

“In each season, Bob puts his players’ needs first and approaches everything he does with a calm and supportive manner. He truly exemplifies Excellence with Humanity in everything he does, and we are proud to acknowledge these two milestones in his coaching career.”
