Student Artwork Wins Recognition, Awards

Two recent spring art shows underscored the strength of Rivers’s art program and celebrated students’ creativity and talent. Rivers students were honored with numerous awards at both the Small Independent School Arts League (SISAL) 2019 exhibition and the juried Page Waterman/Next Up! 2019 show.

“SISAL is a great opportunity for our student artists to showcase their diverse talents,” says David Saul, visual arts department chair. The show, he explains, features several hundred artworks from 15 independent schools. Rivers was represented by 36 artworks, with 16 students earning awards in nine categories, including printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, and photography.

First prizes went to Lisa Byrne ’19, printmaking; Michael Webber ’19, sculpture; Aliesha Campbell ’20, hand-built ceramics; and Chris Bucking ’19, woodworking. Second prizes were awarded to Marina Joseph ’24, painting; Matt Cronin ’19, printmaking; Caleb Leeming ’19, wheel-thrown ceramics; and Julia Bauriedel ’19, photography. Third-prize winners were Lindsey Filoon ’21, hand-built ceramics; Ashley Shegog ’19, wheel-thrown ceramics; and Tully Mahoney ’19, photography. Honorable mentions were garnered by Lily Branka ’20, sculpture; Dylan Mentis ’20, hand-built ceramics; Max Meyerhardt ’21, hand-built ceramics; Evan Roan ’19, wheel-thrown ceramics, and Parker Weil ’19, digital photography.

The Page Waterman gallery’s Next Up! show is a juried and highly selective exhibition. Saul explains, “Sturdy Waterman ’74 owns the gallery, and back in 2017, he decided to celebrate the gallery’s centennial with the first Next Up! exhibition. It was very successful and now has turned into an annual event.” Both public and private schools in Wellesley and adjacent towns are invited to participate; this year, about 200 entries were submitted, and jurors selected about 70 of those for inclusion in the show. Says Saul, “It is great that 11 Rivers students had their artwork selected for exhibition [one student had two pieces selected].” Four Rivers artists were recognized with awards: One received first place in the two-dimensional art category, and three students were given honorable mentions.

The Rivers students chosen for the show were Julia Bauriedel ’19, gelatin silver print; Caleb Leeming ’19, porcelain (honorable mention); Tully Mahoney ’19, gelatin silver print; Camille Phelan ’19, gelatin silver print; Ashley Shegog ’19, stoneware (honorable mention); Abi Warwick ’19, chalk pastel (first prize) and color linoleum print; Parker Weil ’19, ink jet print; Jackson Desmond ’20, stoneware; Nicholas Hardy ’20, gelatin silver print; George Reinhardt ’20, gelatin silver print (honorable mention); and Meredith Shah ’21, chalk pastel.
