Eight Rivers Students Earn Presidential Volunteer Service Awards

During Friday’s Upper School assembly, Assistant Head of School Jim Long presented eight Rivers students with Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for their work over the last year.
 
The Presidential Volunteer Service Award was established in 2003 with the goal of recognizing the contributions that volunteers make in their communities and encouraging others to do their part. The Award recognizes those who have achieved a certain amount of service hours over the past 12 months and fall into three categories based on the amount of hours.
 
Achieving the Bronze level requires between 100-174 hours of service, the Silver level requires 175-249 service hours, and the Gold level is reserved for those completing over 250 hours of service.
 
Bronze Award recipients were
  • Miranda Bachman ’14 for working with senior citizen residents of an assisted living facility in Roslindale and also volunteered at a program for sea turtle conservation in Mexico
  • Abby Finn ’16 for caring for children as part of a leadership training program in addition to local environmental clean-up work
  • Emily Fraser ’14 for leading a children’s summer camp experience in rural villages of Costa Rica
  • Julia Strauss ’15 for participating in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Summer Health Corps high school volunteer program, greeting patients, escorting and guiding them in the hospital in addition to completing special projects
  • Claudia Wittenberg ’15 for working overseas in service initiatives focused on education, the environment, and community health, in addition to assisting in the Autism Speaks summer event held in Massachusetts.
 
Receiving Silver Awards were Patrick El Khoury ’15 for planning and leading a summer children’s reading program at a local library, supporting the Pan Mass Challenge on Cape Cod, and working with children in the summer in a camp setting; and Kate Everett ’16 for caring for young children in their sports, art, swim activities of day camp held at Rivers.
 
Daniel Gil ’15 received a Gold Award for working with children in their daily activities of summer camp as well as working with children with terminal illnesses in an overnight camp environment.
