In addition to the Summer Science Internship program, Rivers also gives students an opportunity to take on a rigorous internship in the business world. This summer we have two students, Jake Goldberg ’15 and Joe McCartney ’15, gaining valuable professional experience at two of Boston’s finest companies.

Just like their science counterparts, Joe and Jake will be sharing their experiences at Audax Group and America’s Growth Capital, respectively, with us throughout the summer. To read these reflections in full, please visit our Facebook page!

Joe McCartney (Audax Group)

I have worked on four different deals, and all of which were very different. I’ve had to research car exhaust systems, dentistry locations, physical therapy facilities, and Green Earth – a company that deals with the cleaning of soil. For each of my assignments for the different companies, I have been given different tasks to complete. For Gentle Dental, my mentor asked for me to search for dentistry locations in the Boston area and input their information into an excel spreadsheet. Although the task was mentally straining, it felt gratifying afterwards when my mentor told me that this information was vital for the company add-on process. I felt accomplished in actually benefiting the company through these assignments. Instead of simply being taught what to do, Audax has combined learning exercises with necessary work for me to do to help the company.

Jake Goldberg (AGC)

As an intern, I am tasked with a myriad of possible duties. During my first week, I was asked to put together PowerPoint presentations, entitled buyer profiles, for Verizon, Adobe, Twitter, and WPP. In short, these presentations are five slide PowerPoints that detail a company’s financial history, board of directors, latest M&A activity, and other essential information. AGC will then later use these buyer profiles as informational guides when meeting with a company as a potential client. In addition to creating buyer profiles, I also updated online company information on AGC’s clientele, posted job applications on university websites, and sat in on an intern meeting with AGC’s CEO. The work I do is far from menial; in fact, it is a fundamental aspect of AGC’s transactions.
