Boys’ Ski Team Wins NEPSAC Title
The boys’ varsity ski team secured the NEPSAC championship title at Mount Sunapee on Wednesday, led by top-ten slalom and giant slalom finishes by captain Tom Barker ’13 and Stephen Richlen ’15.
“Their strong finishes were key to the success yesterday,” said Coach Jonathan Damon, who was pleased with the outcome of Wednesday’s race. “Our team performed consistently and excelled in racing fast when it mattered most. They did a great job yesterday and their coaches and parents couldn't be prouder.”
Competing against 12 other teams, Rivers finished third in boys’ slalom and second in boys’ giant slalom, combining for a first place finish overall. Aside from their success on the slopes, however, Damon says he is equally as proud of their integrity off the slopes.
“In addition to racing well, they showed great character and sportsmanship in competing hard, congratulating other competitors on their individual placements, and being humble victors,” said Damon. “It was a great representation of Rivers’ dedication to excellence on and off the playing field.”
The team is preparing for one more race this season. Key racers and team leaders Kate Bullion ’12 on the girls’ squad and Griffin Kay ’12 will be graduating this spring, but Damon is confident that the younger skiers will excel again next season.
“The championship team showed that it is very deep and there are many talented racers at Rivers, so we look forward to more results like yesterday’s win,” he said.
