Brooke Heinsohn '16 Named Gatorade Girls' Soccer Player of the Year

Brooke Heinsohn ’16 has had an incredible senior year on the soccer field. She helped Rivers claim ISL and NEPSAC Championships, suited up for the Under-20 Women’s National Team, was named a NSCAA All-American, and on Thursday morning was named the Massachusetts Gatorade Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year.

Brooke allowed just two goals in 10 games for Rivers this year and recorded a shutout in each of the Red Wings’ NEPSAC Class B Tournament wins, brining her career total to 50. She is just the second goalkeeper to earn this prestigious award in girls’ soccer and the first since 2004, when former Boston Breakers goalkeeper – and current assistant coach – Ashley Phillips was honored.

“Brooke Heinsohn is one of the best goalkeepers to come out of Massachusetts in a long time,” said Brooks School head coach Jaime Gilbert. “What separates her from others is her physical prowess. Having her in the net is like playing with an 11th field player. She’s confident on her line and almost impossible to score against.”

Brooke is the second Rivers student-athlete to be named a Gatorade State Player of the Year, joining former boys’ soccer standout and current professional soccer player Charlie Rugg ’09. Brooke will continue her soccer career next fall at Duke University.

This honor automatically makes Brooke a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year award, which will be announced in May. Click here to read the full release from Gatorade and see a full list of the 2016 State Players of the Year.
