The Nonesuch Players Present: You Can't Take It With You

This fall, the Nonesuch Players have chosen a production that is sure to please audiences young and old. Their production of You Can’t Take it With You opens Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. for the first of four shows.

The Pulitzer Prize winning play was chosen because its title, and in turn its message, is something that Director Juliet Bailey feels the students can really identify with.

“The play has such a heart to it,” Bailey said. “It’s goofy, it’s screwball – but the meaning of it, ‘You can’t take it with you, live for the moment,’ is something that really resonates now, and teenagers get it.”

That message has drawn many first-time actors to the play, but the veterans of the stage have helped the newcomers grow into their roles, and the structure of this play allows for more of an ensemble experience that wasn’t available in last fall’s Almost, Maine, a series of two-person scenes. This particular show’s characters have given the cast license to step outside of their individual personalities and into the personalities of this dysfunctional family’s members.

“There are so many big characters, so watching everyone figure out how they can become their characters is really funny, and there is never a dull moment at rehearsal,” said Adrienne Vanderhooft ’16 who plays Penelope Sycamore.

The various types of comedy at work in this play will make sure the audience members walk out of Haffenreffer’s Black Box with a smile on their faces. From slap-stick humor to situational comedy to more traditional quick-witted lines, You Can’t Take it With You has a flavor for everyone’s comedic taste.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, October 30, and can be purchased online. Opening night is Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m followed by evening performances on Friday and Saturday nights, and a matinee performance on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
