Eight Students Earn National Merit Recognition

Eight Rivers students recently received National Merit recognition for their performance on last year’s PSAT/NMSQT, a test cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Of those, senior Julia Strauss was named a semi-finalist.

Commended students included seniors Marissa Birne, William Cohen, Jennifer Lowell, James Nydam, Kayleigh Rahbany, Rhea Teng, and Kendall Young.

The PSATs provide practice for the SAT and offer semi-finalists the opportunity to qualify for student scholarships. Current seniors, who took the exam last fall, needed to score above the 96th percentile to be commended. As a semi-finalist, Strauss scored above the 99th percentile, and may now compete for recogntion as a National Merit Finalist as well as for a National Merit Scholarship.

“While National Merit awards recognize students for their outstanding achievement on the PSAT, these outstanding Rivers students have performed exceedingly well across the disciplines throughout their entire high school careers,” remarked Head of Upper School Patricia Carbery. “This recognition is a tribute to their work ethic and commitment to academic excellence.”
