Rivers Launches Composting Program

Paper napkins, plant-based cups, and corn-based utensils – they’re all part of lunch time at Rivers right now. Members of the dining hall staff feed more than 600 people a mid-day meal on campus, and now the Rivers community can toss what they don’t eat, what they eat on, and what they eat with into compost bins.

Rivers began composting just after the start of the new year. As construction progresses on the new campus center, faculty and students continue to use MacDowell Athletic Center as their temporary dining hall. With that move came a loss of the dishwashing facility and the need for single-use biodegradable serving ware during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Rivers is partnering with a company called Save That Stuff, which picks up the compost the school community produces twice a week and transports the materials to Brick Ends Farm in South Hamilton, MA. There, founder Peter Britton and his team convert the diverted organics into a nutrient-rich compost that is primarily used by local organic farms, landscapers, and homeowners.
